Food from the Oceans

SAPEA played a major role on this topic within the Scientific Advice Mechanism. The High Level Group delivered a Scientific Opinion to Commissioner Vella on 29 November 2017.

The Opinion was informed by SAPEA’s Evidence Review Report ‘Food from the Oceans’, which gathers evidence and expertise in response to the question: ‘How can more food and biomass be obtained from the oceans in a way that does not deprive future generations of their benefits?’

Alongside SAPEA’s scientific work on this topic, three public engagement events were organised in Bergen, Norway, in Cardiff, UK and in Hamburg, Germany. These successful events included collaboration with the German Wissenschaftsjahr 2016*17, the Union of German Academies of Sciences, Cardiff International Food and Drink Festival, the Learned Society of Wales, UNESCO, the Royal Norwegian Embassy, Bergen City Council and Academia Europaea’s Bergen and Cardiff Hubs.

 


The collaborative work on this topic between SAPEA and the High Level Group was presented at the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters in Oslo, Norway on 15 November, and at the Bioeconomy Policy Day in Brussels, Belgium on 16 November. The work also featured in the Social Innovation conference in Lisbon, Portugal on 27-28 November:
