Jerzy Duszyński


The Polish Academy of Sciences (PAS) is pleased to announce that the General Assembly of the Academy held in Warsaw on 19 March 2015 elected Professor Jerzy Duszyński as the President of the Academy for 2015-2018 term of office. On 9 April 2015 Prof. Jerzy Duszyński was formally appointed by the Prime Minister of the Republic of Poland.

Prof. Jerzy Duszyński, corresponding member of the Academy, is a leading Polish biochemist specialising in energy metabolism and molecular basis of mitochondrial diseases and neurodegenerative disorders. He is closely associated with the Nencki Institute of Experimental Biology PAS in Warsaw. In the years 2008-2009 he performed the function of the Undersecretary of State in the Ministry of Science and Higher Education. In the years 2011-2014 he served as the Dean of the Division of Biological and Agricultural Sciences of the Polish Academy of Sciences. Prof. Jerzy Duszyński is a member of numerous international organisations and of editorial boards of leading scientific journals.


The mission of the Academy is the development, promotion, integration and dissemination of science as well as contribution to the development of education and enrichment of national culture. The tasks of the Academy comprise in particular: (1) research activities, (2) presentation of opinions and programs related to science and its practical application, (3) international scientific cooperation effected through membership in international scientific organizations and cooperation with foreign scientific institution, (4) education at different levels (PhD level in particular), (5) cooperation with other scientific and higher education institutions as well as with learned societies, (6) issuing opinions on drafts of legal acts concerning science and its application as well as higher education.

Highlights 2014

  • The Division IV Engineering Sciences of the Polish Academy of Sciences every year organizes or sponsors international conferences and seminars in cooperation with PAN scientific and technical organizations. In 2014 the following international events were organized:
  • Forum Acusticum (682 participants, 7-12.09., Cracow, Poland); XV International Conference on Electron Microscopy EM2014 (251 participants, 15-18.09., Cracow Poland); XXI Fluid Mechanics Conference (150 participants, 15-18.06., Cracow, Poland), IEEE Intelligent Systems IS’14, Seventh International Conference on Intelligent Systems 2014 (127 participants; 24-26.09., Warsaw, Poland), XII International Symposium on Explosive Production of New Materials: Science, Technology, Business and Innovation EPNM-2014 (117 participants; 25-30.05., Cracow, Poland); 51st Symposium on Physicochemical Problems of Mineral Processing (108 participants; 15-17.09., Istebna, Poland); 20th International Scientific and Technical Conference, KONTECH on Advanced Forming Technologies and Nanostructured Materials (102 participants; 4.06., Wasowo, Poland), International Symposium of Electric Machines (89 participants, 22-25.06., Szczawnica, Poland), XV International Symposium "Heat Transfer and Renewable Sources of Energy, HTRSE-2014" (85 participants, 1-3.09., Miedzyzdroje, Poland).
  • Worth mentioning are also: conference organized by the Polish Academy of Sciences on 3 November in Warsaw entitled: The Reality of Climate Change – worse than we thought? The latest findings of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which gathered more than 100 participants and the Seminar on the perspectives of scientific cooperation between Poland-Italy, which took place on 6-7 November 2014 in the Scientific Centre of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Rome with the participation of over 50 participants.
